Interior neon signs usually do not require a city sign permit, especially when they are plug-in and used for decorative purposes. This is common for LED neon installed inside retail spaces, offices, or homes. That said, some landlords, shopping centers, or HOAs may still require their own approval—particularly for signs visible through windows.

Hardwired interior signs may require an electrical permit, even if a sign permit is not required. This is common for acrylic neon and some glass neon installations and is typically handled by a licensed electrician.

Exterior neon signs almost always require a sign permit, regardless of whether the sign is LED neon, acrylic neon, or glass neon. Many jurisdictions also require an electrical permit for illuminated or hardwired exterior signs. Because exterior signage is regulated by local zoning and building codes, it’s safest to assume a permit will be required unless confirmed otherwise by the city.

In most cases, your installer or electrician can use the drawings and specifications we provide to pull the required permits and schedule inspections. If preferred, we can also assist with permitting or apply for permits on your behalf upon request, depending on the location and local requirements.
